Landeyjahöfn

The Herfjólfur ferry began sailing from Landeyjahöfn in the summer of 2010. Following this, the travelling time between the mainland and the Westman Islands shortened drastically — from nearly three hours to just over 30 minutes — with the subsequent effect that travelling between Reykjavík and the Islands now only takes two hours instead of four.

It is abundantly clear that the construction of Landeyjahöfn has revolutionised transportation to and from the Westman Islands. Through the peak summer seas Herjólfur sails up to seven times a day between the mainland and the Islands, but over the course of the winter months fewer trips are made due to weather and wave conditions. During shallow periods in Landeyjahöfn it is still possible to sail from it, given that the tide is in, and waves stay below 2.5 meters.
