The bridge over Jökulsá á Fjöllum
Maintenance operations on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum bridge began on May 26th, with initial plans estimating repairs to be completed on June 16th. This being said, heavy rain over the past few weeks has caused delays, and the decision has been made to delay further maintenance work until after the most traffic-heavy weeks of summer have passed.
The bridge was built in 1947 and its load-bearing capacity has reduced over the decades. Considerable rust formation has occurred in the bridge’s cables, making it a chief priority to finish maintenance work as soon as possible.
Traffic restrictions were put in place during the maintenance period but will now be lifted temporarily. The restrictions will take hold once more on Monday, August 17th.
Thereafter, if weather stays dry, maintenance restrictions will be in place every weekday from 8:00 in the morning to 19:00 in the evening. The bridge will be open for traffic during the following time periods each day:
09:45 – 10:15
12:00 – 13:00
14:45 – 15:15
16:45 – 17:15
Closures should not effect emergency transport greatly, as the bridge can be opened for emergency traffic on short notice if deemed necessary.
