Work on renewing the lighting in the Hvalfjörður Tunnel began just over a week ago. The contractor has made good progress, and part of the new lighting at the southern end of the tunnel has now been switched on. Motorists are advised of a revised speed limit at the Hvalfjörður Tunnel while the work is underway.

Rafmenn ehf. are the contractors carrying out the project. They are currently progressing through the tunnel from the southern side, working section by section to complete the lighting upgrade. So far, between 450 and 500 existing lights have been removed, while 56 new lights have already been installed. Temporary work lighting has also been put in place to ensure visibility in the areas where the original lights have been taken down. In addition, approximately 3,400 meters of old cabling has been removed and replaced with 2,800 meters of new cables. A further 130 new driver boxes have also been installed as part of the upgraded system. Motorists can already get a preview of how the finished result will look, as part of the new daylight-style lighting at the southern end of the tunnel has now been switched on.
A revised speed limit came into effect this morning on the southern approach to the Hvalfjörður Tunnel. The maximum speed has been reduced from 70 km/h to 50 km/h along a stretch of approximately 500 meters, extending from the tunnel entrance to the first lay-by on the southern side. This lower speed limit applies to traffic travelling in both directions. The change has been introduced because lighting at the tunnel entrance has been reduced during the ongoing construction work.
Drivers and other road users are asked to remain alert, drive carefully through the area, and fully respect the new temporary speed restrictions while the work is being completed.
