A large majority supports the construction of Sundabraut
Three out of four Icelanders support the construction of Sundabraut, according to a survey conducted by Maskína for the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration. Of the 76 percent who are in favor of building Sundabraut, just over 47 percent said they are strongly in favor, and 28.5 percent are somewhat in favor. The survey was conducted from October 3 to 15, with a total of 2,182 respondents.
More people consider it important that Sundabraut be designed to accommodate pedestrians than those who see it as less important. According to the survey, 41 percent of Icelanders believe pedestrian access is very important, while 33 percent consider it to be of little importance. An even greater share of respondents emphasized the importance of including facilities for cyclists — 58 percent said this was important, compared with 21 percent who thought it mattered little. This highlights strong public support for ensuring that the new route serves not only motorists but also people who walk or cycle.
Among residents of Grafarvogur, around one in five expect to use Sundabraut on a daily basis, and 38 percent believe they will use it one to five times per week. This is significantly higher than in other parts of the country, reflecting the route’s relevance for local travel within the capital area. Meanwhile, 54 percent of people living outside the capital region say they expect to use the new road a few times a year, showing that Sundabraut is also viewed as an important link for regional connections and travel to Reykjavík.
