Temporary traffic control measures for solar eclip­se on August 12th.

Considerable traffic is expected around West-Iceland during the total solar eclipse, which will pass over the country on August 12th, 2026. This applies particularly around the areas where the eclipse’s duration will be the longest, such as in the Westfjords, and the Snæfellsnes and Reykjanes peninsulas. To ensure traveller safety and clear traffic flow, temporary traffic control measures will be implemented on selected roads.

The first measures will enter into place from 08:00 in the morning of August 12th, and will remain active until after the eclipse, or as is deemed necessary. Most of the affected roads will transform into one-way roads, with driving directions reversed after the eclipse, but other roads will see temporary closures or changes in routing.

Further traffic control measures and/or closures are subject to how traffic develops on August 12th. Should long delays form around the Hvalfjarðagöng tunnel it might be subject to closure, and traffic may have to be directed through Hvalfjörður instead.

Travellers are encouraged to stay organised, set off for their destinations in a timely manner, familiarise themselves considerably with traffic control measures before setting off, and assume a significantly longer travel time than normal.

One-way traffic on select roads

Westfjords

  • Örlygshafnarvegur (612) and Rauðasandsvegur (614): One-way traffic from 08:00 on August 12th.
  • Police surveillance will be in place in the area from 23:00 on the evening of August 11th.

West Iceland

  • Útnesvegur (574) and Klofningsvegur (590): One-way traffic from 09:00 on August 12th.

Reykjanes peninsula

  • Garðskagavegur (45) and Vatnsleysustrandarvegur (420): One-way traffic from 11:00 on August 12th.

Temporary closures

Certain municipalities have made decisions to close or temporarily alter certain routes, such as a few streets in the Capital region, and the road up to Bolafjall by Bolungarvík, to name a few examples.
