4 júní 2026Temporary closures of the bridge over Jökulsá á Fjöllum at Grímsstaðir
Updated June 8th: Today, Monday, June 8th provides excellent conditions for repainting operations on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum bridge, meaning there will be temporary closures and traffic restrictions on the bridge over the coming days. Traffic will be permitted to cross the bridge during these hours: 9:45-10:15am; 12:00-1:00pm; 2:45-3:15pm; 4:45-5:15pm. Further restrictions are in place from 7:00pm on to 8:00am the following morning. No restrictions are in place over the weekend.
Updated June 4th: Due to poor weather conditions there will be no operations on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum bridge from today, Thursday, June 4th, until after the weekend, or until weather conditions permit repainting once more. The bridge will therefore be open to general traffic over the coming days. Further information can be found on the TrafficInfo website.
Updated June 1st: Operations on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum bridge have resumed and traffic restrictions have once more been put in place, as seen below.
Updated May 28th: Due to poor weather conditions there will be no operations on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum bridge today, Thursday, May 28th, and Friday, May 29th. Therefore, no traffic restrictions will be in place from today until 8am, Monday morning, June 1st.
Plans are in place to begin maintenance work on the bridge over Jökulsá á Fjöllum by Grímsstaðir (Route 1) on the forthcoming 26th of May, and for this work to be completed on June 16th. Work will commence at 8 am every morning and will be finished at 7 pm each evening. The bridge will be closed to the public due to this maintenance, but will be opened for traffic four times per day, three times for half an hour and once for a full hour. The bridge will also be open after operations have concluded each evening and stay open until the following morning. It will furthermore be open on weekends.
The bridge over Jökulsá á Fjöllum
The bridge is to be repainted over the designated time period, as long as weather permits. Should unfavourable weather conditions render repainting operations impossible the project will be delayed further into the summer.
Work on the site will go from 8:00am each morning until 7:00pm at night. Traffic will be permitted across the bridge during the following hours, each day:
9:45-10:15am
12:00-1:00pm
2:45-3:15pm
4:45-5:15pm
Closures should not effect emergency transport greatly, since the bridge can be opened for traffic on very short notice, should circumstances require it.
Informative signs with all relevant instructions and markings will be installed around the bridge.
