Agreement reached with Icelandair for flights to Hornafjörður

The IRCA has reached an agreement with Icelandair for scheduled flight service between Reykjavík and Hornafjörður for the years 2025 until 2028.

The contract was advertised in March, with proposal submissions opening on April 23rd. Three proposals were received:

  • Icelandair ehf., Reykjavík. Price per seat totaling 21,824 ISK sans VAT
  •  Air ehf., Garðabær. Price per seat totaling 23,617 ISK sans VAT
  • Norlandair, Akureyri. Price per seat totaling 44,872 ISK sans VAT

Grant funding for the flight route (F1) Reykjavík — Hornafjörður — Reykjavík totals 1,259,700,000 ISK for the whole duration of the three-year project. Five flights are planned per week for a total seating availability of roughly 370 per week. 

The contract’s duration is three years, taking effect on September 1st this year until August 31st 2028. Individual, one-year extensions are possible, for a maximum of two extra years total.

Fewer flights will be available than were previously; however, seating availability is greatly increased with 37-seater DHC-8-200’s (Dash-8) being pressed into service.

The route is important for residents of South-East Iceland, but we also see exciting opportunities in being able to secure this popular tourist destination into our commercial- and distribution systems, making it more accessible to our European- and North-American customers. Furthermore, passengers travelling to and from Höfn can now utilize Icelandair’s high standard of service, including digital customer service and participation in our loyalty club.”
