Jökulsá á Fjöllum – maintenance work to resume on August 17th

Plans are in effect to resume maintenance work on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum bridge, by Grímsstaðir on the Ring Road (1), from Monday, August 17th onwards. This is a continuation of work that began last June, but was stopped due to difficult weather conditions.

Work is expected to continue through mid-September so that all projects scheduled for this summer can be completed; however, it stands to mention that all operations are weather-dependent.

Since the bridge was built in 1947, its load-bearing capacity has reduced quite a bit through the decades. There is considerable rust formation in some of the bridge’s cables, making it very important to halt those developments by finishing all projects before the winter.

The bridge will need to be closed during operations, with closures remaining the same as they were at the beginning of summer.

Maintenance work will be undertaken on all weekdays, from 08:00 in the morning to 19:00 in the evening. During operations, traffic will be let onto the bridge four times each day

  • 09:45 — 10:15
  • 12:00 — 13:00
  • 14:45 — 15:15
  • 16:45 — 17:15

The bridge will be reopened at work’s end each day in the evening, and until work resumes once more in the morning. The bridge will remain open all day on weekends.

Certain maintenance operations, such as repainting, cannot be undertaken at night due to increased humidity

These foreseen closures should not have a great effect on emergency transport, as it will be possible to open the bridge to emergency traffic swiftly should the situation require it. Informative signs with direction and markings will be placed by the bridge.

The IRCA asks all travellers in the area to be patient and to follow all instructions in the area.

Real-time information on traffic limitations can always be found on the IRCA’s Traffic Info website.
