Increa­se in Traffic in the Capital Regi­on

Comparison Between August 2025 and August 2026

Traffic in the Capital Region increased in August compared with the same month last year, according to data from three key traffic count sites operated by the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration. Across the three sites, the overall increase was 0.6 per cent. Traffic volumes at these locations have never previously been higher in August. However, the proportional increase recorded on the Ring Road was considerably greater.

Two of the three traffic count sites recorded an increase. Traffic declined by 3.7 per cent on Hafnarfjarðarvegur by Kópavogslækur, while the largest increase—2.5 per cent—was recorded on Reykjanesbraut by Dalvegur in Kópavogur.

Traffic by Day of the Week in 2026

Traffic volumes were highest on Thursdays and lowest on Sundays during the month.

Compared with August 2025, the largest decline occurred on Wednesdays, at 3.5 per cent, while the largest increase was recorded on Fridays, at 4.3 per cent.

Traffic Since the Beginning of the Year

Traffic has increased by 0.2 per cent since the beginning of the year compared with the same period in 2025. Overall, the estimated increase is continuing to fall short of the outlook at the beginning of the year.
