31 ágúst 2026Hornafjörður Ring road tolls collected from September 1st onwards
A new section of the Ring road (1) in Hornafjörður was formally opened to traffic last June, and road tolls will begin to be collected from traffic passing through the section from September onwards. The tolls will be used as a means to partly finance construction, operation and maintenance costs for the Hornafjörður Ring road.

Collection of the toll is overseen by Spölur ehf., with the goal to render the collection process as easy and user-friendly as possible.
The collection will be fully automated, and there will be no need for travellers to log in or pay at collection booths immediately as they drive through. Cameras placed at the limits of the tolled section will read each vehicle’s license plate and pull information on ownership from the national vehicle directory. A bill is then sent to the owner’s personal bank each month.

Price list
The road toll was, among other reasons, determined through consideration of what travellers stand to gain through the new road section, such as reduced travelling time, lower fuel and operation costs, and better driving conditions.
A single trip for a vehicle under 3.5 tonnes will total in at 1,500 ISK, vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes will be charged 2,100 ISK, and large vehicles over 7.5 tonnes will be charged 4,500 ISK. Charges are determined by the vehicle’s stated total weight as per the national directory.
Smaller and medium-sized vehicles (up to 7.5 tonnes), will be offered discounts, with a limit put on monthly charges, so that the smallest vehicles (3.5 tonnes and below) will see a maximum monthly charge of 18,750 ISK, whilst medium-sized vehicles (between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes) will see a maximum monthly charge of 26,250 ISK. No monthly limit will be in place for vehicles above 7.5 tonnes.
The first cooperative project
The new road along Hornafjörður sees the total length of the Ring road reduced by 12 km, with the Route from Reykjavík to Höfn in Hornafjörður reduced by about 14 km in total. Estimates show that travel time through the region will be reduced by 15 to 20 minutes. The project entailed the laying of about 19 km of new Ring road, 9 km of other roads and the construction of four two-lane bridges, a total of 468 m long. A rest stop was also developed and a roundabout placed by Hafnarvegur.
The project is the first cooperative project that the IRCA oversees. In accordance with cooperative project laws road tolls are expected to compile upwards of 50% of construction, maintenance, operation and development costs of the total infrastructure project. Total costs for the Hornafjörður project are estimated to total in around 10,000,000,000 ISK.
