Construction progressing well at Dynjandisheiði

Construction on the third and final phase of Vestfjarðavegur (Route 60) through Dynjandisheiði began this spring and is now well underway. In the coming weeks and months, blasting will take place on the upper section of the road, located at approximately 300 meters above sea level. Steel plate culverts will also be installed in the Dynjandisá River. Work is expected to continue throughout the winter, weather permitting.

This spring, work began on removing a concrete bridge over the Svín River, as well as blasting boulders in the roadbed. In May and June, work was carried out on Dynjandavegur, an 800-meter-long road leading to Dynjanda Waterfall. Two steel culverts were installed in the Svín River, measuring 220 cm and 240 cm in diameter. Blasting continued both in the road area and in the quarry.

In July, work focused on grinding cladding material, and filling operations continued on Dynjandavegur. By the end of the month, approximately 30,000 cubic meters of material had been blasted. Filling on Dynjandavegur was completed, and additional work was carried out on a 400-meter section of Dynjandisheiði.

Work progressed in August, with around 40,000 cubic meters blasted in both the quarry and the road area. By that time, filling had been completed on Dynjandavegur, and the reinforcement layer had begun to be laid on part of the road. Construction activities included a 1,000-meter section of Dynjandisvegur, and preparations started on the upper part of the road section.

At the start of construction, six workers were on site, and the equipment included two tracked vehicles, two bulldozers, one truck, a drilling rig, and one additional bulldozer. This summer, the number of workers and amount of equipment have increased, with more expected in the coming weeks.

The work began slightly later than originally planned and progressed slowly during the first few months, but it is now advancing well.
