The plan is to hoist a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge onto Sæbraut at the beginning of next week and install it on the stairwells that have been built at Dugguvogur and Snekkjuvogur, weather permitting. At the same time, height barriers will be installed on either side of the new bridge.
The construction will take place at night to minimize traffic impact. During the night, Sæbraut will be closed on this section. More extensive closures can be expected to be announced closer to the date.
The new pedestrian bridge is located halfway between the intersection of Sæbraut and Súðavogur on the one hand and Kleppsmýrarvegur on the other. It will create a new pedestrian route between Dugguvogur and Tranavogur and Snekkjuvogur.
The bridge is intended to significantly improve traffic safety for road users between the new Vogabyggð and Vogahverfi, not least for schoolchildren at Vogaskóli.
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration recommends that contractors and transport companies inform their employees of these height restrictions. The reason is to encourage drivers of larger vehicles to put platforms on trucks, pack up truck cranes, and so on, so that there are no accidents or incidents due to the height restrictions.
Once the bridge is in place, work on the stairwells will continue. The connections between the bridge and the stairwells will be completed, lighting and a camera system will be installed, the soil around the stairwells will be prepared, and pedestrian and bicycle paths will be paved. Lifts will then be installed at both ends of the bridge.
The construction is a collaborative project between the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, the City of Reykjavík and Better Transportations and is financed by the Transport Agreement.
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration is supervising the work on behalf of the client.
